Accountant III, City of Dearborn

SALARY:
Minimum: $65,973 per year Maximum: $83,572 per year

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position is responsible for the analysis, reporting, and other tasks related to complex financial systems. Responsibilities may include preparing financial reports; preparing budgets; preparing for audits; providing guidance to staff; and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations. May act as lead worker to employees in lower classifications.

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provides assistance to staff, departments, and others, including: responding to inquiries and/or preparing forms related to pension plans, life insurance, deferred compensation, and other benefits; and/or providing financial and accounting guidance to various staff and departments.
  • Performs related financial tasks, including: calculating changes in pension and other benefit amounts; reviewing and submitting payroll; reviewing and approving contractor applications for payment; recording acquisitions, purchases, and other financial transactions; and/or performing other tasks.
  • Prepares a variety of complex financial reports, journal entries, and related financial documents, including preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
  • Performs tasks related to preparing multi-year budgets, including: compiling financial information; estimating revenues and expenditures; preparing budget balancing reports; consolidating budget information; responding to budget requests from various departments; and determining appropriate budgets for grants or grant administration.
  • Prepares statements, financial entries, and other documents in preparing for audits and/or responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Prepares capital improvement plans.
  • Verifies accounts, purchasing mechanisms, and other areas of accounts payable to ensure proper functioning.
  • Analyzes financial documents to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field and 3 years of related experience; or, Associate’s degree and 5 years of related experience; or, Required certification(s) and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Municipal accounting experience required.

PARTS AND WEIGHTS OF EXAMINATION
Written Exam 60%
Oral Interview 40%
Must receive a minimum grade of 70% on each part.

POST-EMPLOYMENT OFFER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must satisfactorily complete medical examination and criminal history check prior to start date.
  • All appointees are subject to a one-year probationary period.
